Worldcoin Rebrands As World, Unveils New Orb and World Chain to ‘Accelerate Every Human’

Worldcoin, a digital identity management platform backed by OpenAI’s founder Sam Altman, rebranded as World and introduced its new Layer-2 network.

Verified users on World Chain will benefit from zero transaction fees and priority access to block space.

Let’s zoom in on World’s updates and what they mean for the ecosystem.

Fresh Start for Worldcoin

Earlier this month, $WLD experienced extreme volatility following concerns about World ID’s data security and privacy.

Sam Altman is an outstanding entrepreneur. His latest ventures brought him impressive profits. The question is, do his promises align with reality? Not always.

OpenAI is known for prioritizing product over ethics. It stood against Californian safety standards for AI application developers, imitated Scarlet Johansson’s voice without her consent, and fired employees for voicing privacy concerns. The list goes on.

It’s unsurprising that Worldcoin followed the same path. However, the rebrand suggests World is ready to mend its ways.

Orb – World’s Key to Mass Adoption

The name “Worldcoin” no longer encapsulates the mission of the project—to accelerate every human.World

Did they finally gather all the Chaos Emeralds? World doesn’t elaborate on what it means by acceleration. Maybe it’s the next step in human evolution, or maybe someone’s been playing too many Sonic games.

In a separate announcement, World mentions it aims to onboard over a billion verified human users. Currently, there are about 15M.

The new generation of Orb, World’s proprietary identity verification device, is supposed to help with this mission.

NVIDIA’s Jetson module should 5x the system’s performance for faster scanning of the human iris. World promised to triple Orb production capacity and open flagship locations in Mexico and Buenos Aires.

World IDs Migrate to World Chain

Major announcements don’t end here. World’s Layer-2 network on Ethereum, World Chain, will be the backbone of the World ID ecosystem.

As of October 17th, all 15M World ID holders and World App users have either migrated or are in the process of migrating to World Chain—the first blockchain designed to benefit humans first.World

The last bit may be a bit too pretentious. Whom does Ethereum, Solana, or Arbitrum benefit if not humans?

Marketing talk aside, World Chain does offer appealing incentives. Users holding a World ID won’t have to pay gas fess and will get priority access to block space over bots.

Additionally, World Chain will integrate leading apps and networks, such as Optimism, Uniswap, Zerion, and Alchemy, for expanded functionality.

After its recent 25% weekly drop, $WLD rebounded by 20.86% amid World Chain launch excitement. Overall, the token’s performance is bullish, with a 49.92% monthly increase.

Hype or Hope?

The excitement around Worldcoin’s rebrand and World Chain launch is warranted. Still, skepticism over the company’s safety practices remains, and only time will tell whether World stepped on the path of genuine improvement.

Who knows – maybe in five years, the World Chain will host 8B World IDs.
