Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL) plans to build high-rise commercial complexes-cum-office spaces with access to both the Metro and buses in Vadapalani and Mandaveli.
Coming up at ₹481.93 crore, a multi-modal transit hub, spanning over 1.06 lakh sq.m, will be built at Vadapalani’s existing depot site, which spreads over 6.65 acres on Arcot Road. The hub will be a 12-storey structure with two basements, which can house 1,475 two-wheelers and 214 four-wheelers.
On the ground level, a modern bus terminus with five boarding bays and two alighting bays and retail outlets have been planned. The first to 10th floors will be home to office spaces. The last two floors have been designated for the animation, visual effects, gaming, comics, and extended reality (AVGC) sector. This aside, a restaurant zone and dedicated food courts will be created on the fifth floor.
L. Srikanth of Vadapalani said this was an exciting prospect for the area but authorities should ensure that Arcot Road does not get clogged further with congestion. “People coming to the office spaces or retail outlets will stand to benefit greatly since both Phase I and Phase II networks converge in Vadapalani. They can change buses here, making it more convenient,” he added.
In Mandaveli, the multi-modal transit hub will come up on 1.6 acres over the Metro Rail station with bus access on the ground floor. Twin buildings with seven floors will be built. While one of the buildings will be developed into a mall, the other will be earmarked for office spaces.
Baskar S. of Mandaveli said that while this plan could enhance commuters’ travel, CMRL should increase the pace and complete the projects at the soonest. “Travelling from Mandaveli, which faces severe traffic congestion, to nearby areas such as Adyar or distant locations such as the information technology corridor, will get significantly better. In addition, since there is a bus terminus on the ground floor, the issue of last-mile connectivity will be resolved too,” he added.
According to CMRL officials, they have floated tenders for both projects and the contract may be awarded in three to four months. Officials said that while the Vadapalani hub would take nearly three years to complete, the Mandaveli hub will be built within two years.
